TGL Golf: A New Era of Golf Entertainment

TGL is a revolutionary new golf league that brings together the biggest names in the sport and the latest in technology to create an unforgettable fan experience. Founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, TGL features six teams of PGA Tour golfers competing in a 3-on-3 format inside a custom-built arena at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Format

Each TGL match consists of two sessions. The first session is triples, a nine-hole, 3-on-3, alternate-shot format. The second session is singles, where players go one-on-one, head-to-head for six holes, with each golfer playing two holes during the session.

The Course

The course within SoFi Center is infused with various technologies and covers an area approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, roughly the size of a football field. Players hit from real grass tee boxes, fairway surfaces, rough and sand into a giant simulation screen more than 20 times the size of a standard golf simulator.

The Rules

TGL has its own unique set of rules, including a shot clock, timeouts, and an overtime period similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Golfers wear microphones during matches to bring fans closer to the action, and a referee is on the course to enforce the rules.

The Teams

Six teams representing six cities go head-to-head in the seasonlong competition. The teams are:

  • Atlanta Drive GC: Patrick Cantlay, Lucas Glover, Billy Horschel, and Justin Thomas

  • Boston Common Golf: Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, and Adam Scott

  • Jupiter Links Golf Club: Max Homa, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, and Tiger Woods

  • Los Angeles Golf Club: Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, and Sahith Theegala

  • New York Golf Club: Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, and Cameron Young

  • The Bay Golf Club: Ludvig Åberg, Wyndham Clark, Shane Lowry, and Min Woo Lee

The Schedule

The inaugural TGL season tees off on January 7, 2025. Matches are broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+ and are also available to stream on the ESPN app.

The Points System

Similar to the NHL, TGL uses a points-based system for regular-season matches. For each match, teams can earn up to two points toward their regular-season total. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which include a single-elimination semifinal round and a best-of-three championship series.

Conclusion

TGL is a new era of golf entertainment that combines the best of golf and technology to create an exciting and unique fan experience. With its star-studded line-up of players, innovative format, and state-of-the-art venue, TGL is sure to be a hit with golf fans around the world.
