Northern Arizona Astrojacks: A Cosmic Rebrand for Men's Basketball

Northern Arizona men's basketball debuts the Astrojacks, a cosmic-themed alternate identity, paying homage to the region's astronomical history.

On Thursday, the Northern Arizona men's basketball team will step onto the court with a brand-new identity: the Astrojacks. This unique rebranding, unveiled earlier this summer, is part of a broader effort to honor the rich astronomical history of northern Arizona.

A Cosmic Transformation

The Astrojacks’ uniforms are a departure from the team’s traditional all-white home threads. The new jerseys feature a cosmic-themed design with different shades of blue, including a special Pluto Blue—an homage to the dwarf planet Pluto, which was first discovered in Flagstaff, Arizona. The jersey also features a stylized 'A' replacing the standard 'NAU' nameplate, emphasizing the team’s new space-inspired identity.

The Inspiration Behind the Astrojacks

Flagstaff, home to Northern Arizona University, holds a unique place in astronomical history. Not only was Pluto discovered here, but the city was also named the first International Dark Sky City in 2001, recognizing its commitment to preserving dark sky sites. The Astrojacks’ alternate identity reflects this legacy, combining sports with a celebration of space exploration.

A Winning Streak in the Stars

So far, the Astrojacks have been undefeated across all competitions, boasting a record of 3-0-1. This alternate identity has already made appearances in volleyball, soccer, and women’s basketball, with its men’s basketball debut set for this Thursday against the Idaho Vandals. The team will take the court again on Saturday against the Eastern Washington Eagles, marking the final appearance of the Astrojacks for this season.

What’s Next?

While the Astrojacks are a temporary rebranding, their impact has been significant. The innovative design and connection to the region’s history have resonated with fans and players alike. As Northern Arizona continues to embrace its cosmic roots, the Astrojacks could become a recurring theme in the university’s athletic programs.

Stay tuned for the Astrojacks’ next game and witness this stellar transformation in action! 🌌🏀
